Construction

Reliable lifting, conveying, and drive technology for construction projects of any scale – from infrastructure and structural engineering to mechanical engineering and municipal facilities.

Safety and Construction

WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU

In the construction industry, materials, components, and machinery must be moved safely and efficiently, often under challenging conditions. Whether constructing complex structures, positioning multi‑ton elements, or servicing large construction machinery – Columbus McKinnon delivers robust systems that meet the highest standards of safety, performance, and durability.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Our technologies are used across a wide range of demanding construction environments, including bridge and steel construction for the precise positioning of large beams, steel components, and formwork elements. They are also used in construction machinery manufacturing for lifting, rotating, and maintaining large machine parts, as well as in tunnels, floodgates, locks, or flood protection systems at the municipal level.

Pfaff-silberblau SHE Screw Jack Elements Handle High Loads in Construction Machinery

The Pfaff-silberblau screw jack elements of the SHE series from Columbus McKinnon Engineered Products, Kissing, ensure reliable operation in the latest screed systems from the globally operating machine manufacturer Linnhoff & Henne. Only two screw jack elements are required to withstand the forces of 400 kN that occur during the mechanical installation of mastic asphalt. The lifting elements, equipped with a self-locking, grease-lubricated trapezoidal screw spindle, can be positioned with great precision at speeds of 150 mm/min thanks to a high gear ratio (32:1) and a travel of 0.5 mm per revolution.

Magnetek Dredge Crane Application

Magnetek control systems power one of the world’s largest excavator cranes

When the Canadian company TDC Cranes Ltd. began building the very first diesel-electric, AC-powered dragline crane in North America, they chose Magnetek drives and the associated software. At the time, TDC’s crane was the most technologically advanced and productive dragline crane on the entire continent. As such, it required a precise crane control system - one that only we could provide.

Flood Protection System

The region around Greifswald on Germany’s North and Baltic Sea coasts is considered particularly prone to flooding due to its location and therefore relies on a high‑performance flood protection system. At the heart of this system are Pfaff‑silberblau SHE trapezoidal screw jacks from Columbus McKinnon, which move the heavy sliding gates at the harbor piers. In the event of flooding, the main gate is locked and the sliding gates—up to 18 tons in weight and 17 meters wide—at the north and south piers are closed. Specially engineered electromechanical drives lift the gates from their parked position and lower them onto the rails, moving the wheels via a rocker mechanism by up to 150 millimeters.

Loading Bridges

The two enormous loading bridges at the ferry terminal in Kuryk on the shores of the Caspian Sea each include 24 Pfaff‑silberblau SHE 150.1 special screw jacks and 48 custom gear motors. Together, they form the technical foundation that enables complete freight trains to move quickly on and off the ferries.

Renovation of the Margaret Bridge

Two special gantry cranes equipped with SH wire rope hoists support the renovation work on the heavily trafficked Margaret Bridge in Budapest, Hungary. Long steel and concrete components are transported onto the bridge via a 5‑meter jib. Wheel blocks are available in six sizes for wheel loads ranging from 5,000 kg to 30,000 kg.

Hydraulics as lift support

During a bridge refurbishment project, old bridge bearings were replaced with new, higher‑performance ones. To carry out this exchange safely and efficiently, our customer used our high‑quality YEGB hydraulic cylinders. These enabled the bridge to be lifted precisely and in a controlled manner, allowing the old bearings to be removed and the new ones installed.
