Heavy rotors used in power plants and industrial facilities

Foundry

A foundry in the Czech Republic modernized its entire crane infrastructure. The new cranes had to withstand intense dust exposure and ambient temperatures exceeding 55 °C. Several single-girder and double-girder overhead cranes with load capacities of 5, 6, 10, and 12.5 tons were installed, equipped with operator platforms and optional remote-control operation. Additional solutions include jib cranes and column-mounted slewing cranes with outreaches of 3 m (up to 3 t) and 4 m (up to 0.5 t).

Smart Zinc Processing System

A tailored lifting system based on versatile SHE screw jacks significantly reduces downtime in zinc-coating processes within the steel industry. The key features:
A dedicated sensor monitors gearbox oil temperature and regulates it via an active cooling circuit. At the same time, a non-contact temperature sensor continuously monitors spindle heat, shutting the system down only when overheating is imminent.

500-Ton Continuous-Duty Lifting System

Designed for high-capacity galvanized steel production, this 500-ton lifting system operates without duty-cycle limitations thanks to a newly developed active cooling circuit. Automatic lubrication systems are no longer required, enabling uninterrupted operation even under extreme loads. Depending on application needs, the lifting system can be engineered for 750 tons or more with 100% availability.

Moving Turbines with Slings

During a power plant maintenance project, a heavy turbine needed to be lifted and repositioned. The Yale RSX XL polyester round sling (PES), compliant with EN 1492-2, was used. Before lifting, the sling was inspected for visible damage and its load capacity verified. It was then positioned precisely around the turbine to ensure even load distribution and safe handling.

"Iron Gate" Lock System

The Iron Gate, an impressive gorge along the Danube River (border between Romania and Serbia), features two hydroelectric power plants with lock systems. For maintaining the lock gates, Columbus McKinnon engineered and installed a special lifting solution. The system uses four high-precision, heavy-duty SHE 100.1 screw jacks that raise and lower the approximately 200-ton lock gate by 700 mm with a deviation of less than 0.1 mm.

Hydropower Plant Maintenance

A major hydropower modernization project was successfully completed using CraneKits from STAHL CraneSystems. The new crane performs numerous heavy-lift operations at the plant, including lifting 220-ton rotors for maintenance—without requiring removal of the stator poles.
